02

2 · Modeling & calculations

LV/MV digital model, short circuit, voltage drop and sizing, with industry-standard tools.

03

3 · Compliance & optimization

Standards verification (CSA, Québec, IEC/EN/NF), then optimization to reduce losses.

04

4 · Report & scenarios

Structured deliverables, ready for your stakeholders, validated in normal and degraded modes.

Standards

Mastered standards, down to the last figure.

Every deliverable integrates the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code and its Québec adaptations, as well as international standards depending on the context.

Energy Management Systems

EMS architecture — the EPRI reference hierarchical model

In accordance with EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) research, an EMS is a hierarchical system that supervises, optimizes and controls distributed energy resources (DER) and microgrid loads. It sits above the local controllers (inverters, batteries, generators) and below the SCADA or DERMS.

L1

Data acquisition & communication — Data Layer

Collects all microgrid data: AMI meters, PV inverters, batteries (BMS), diesel/gas generators, EV charging stations, protection relays and grid sensors (voltage, frequency, THD).

L2

Monitoring & forecasting — Supervision Layer

Real-time measurement (voltage, frequency, battery SOC, PV generation), solar and load forecasting, tariff forecasting (TOU, peak pricing) and event detection: overload, fault, islanding.

L3

Optimization & decision — EMS Core

The brain of the system: optimal power flow (OPF), model predictive control (MPC), peak shaving, economic dispatch, battery scheduling, solar curtailment, load prioritization and islanding decision logic.

L4

Command & execution — Dispatch Layer

Sending setpoints to the equipment: battery power setpoints, inverter voltage/frequency setpoints, generator start/stop, load control (shed, shift, shave) and EV charging station control.

Complete integration. Monitoring, forecasting, optimization and dispatch — our EMS follows the EPRI control chains, ensures grid-code compliance and drives the microgrid from grid-connected to islanded mode.

Micro-Grid Controller

Three-level hierarchical architecture — IEEE 2030.7 model

A microgrid controller is the central processor (hardware + software) that manages generation, storage and loads in a microgrid to keep voltage and frequency stable, in grid-connected as well as islanded mode, in accordance with the IEEE 2030.7 reference model.

P1

Primary control — milliseconds

Local and autonomous, executed by converters and DER: grid-forming / grid-following, droop control (ΔP/Δf, ΔQ/ΔV), synthetic inertia and communication-free power sharing. Ultra-fast response (50–100 ms) for immediate stabilization.

  • Grid-forming for PV/battery inverters
  • Synthetic inertia
P2

Secondary control — seconds to minutes

Substation / microgrid-level coordination: restoration of nominal frequency (50/60 Hz) and voltage, AGC, local reserve coordination and power flow rebalancing.

  • 50/60 Hz & nominal voltage restoration
  • Automatic Generation Control (AGC)
  • Local reserves & rebalancing
P3

Tertiary control — minutes to hours

System / operator level: economic optimization, DER dispatch, congestion management, load and generation forecasting, coordination with SCADA / DMS / EMS.

  • Economic optimization & dispatch
  • Congestion & forecasting
  • SCADA · DMS · EMS coordination

From stability to resilience. Advanced monitoring (AMI, PMU), distribution automation (FLISR, smart reclosers), Volt-VAR optimization, bidirectional EV charging (V2G/V2H) and end-to-end cybersecurity (IEC 62351, NERC CIP).
