Define the settings that isolate a fault in a few cycles, without unnecessary outages. You work on networks of varying quality — from industrial substations to transmission grids — and you back every setting with a verifiable study.
You assess short-circuit currents (IEC 60909/61363), build selective coordination schemes and propose relay settings that hold up against real-world scenarios: contingencies, transformers, distributed generation and islanded networks. You also support field teams through commissioning, from logic checks to trip tests.
Key responsibilities
- Run low/medium/high-voltage short-circuit studies per IEC 60909 and IEC 61363 (islanded networks).
- Build selectivity coordination schemes and numeric relay settings (distance, differential, overcurrent).
- Model networks in DIgSILENT PowerFactory and ETAP; validate models against field measurements.
- Produce logic diagrams, coordination curves and defensible engineering reports.
- Verify wiring logic and trip tests before energization.
- Contribute to arc-flash studies (NFPA 70E / CSA Z462) and grounding studies.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering; junior OIQ member or on track to obtain it.
- 3 to 6 years of experience in power system protection, or an equivalent profile.
- Proficiency with DIgSILENT, ETAP or equivalent; knowledge of digital relay technology.
- Familiarity with electrical safety standards (CSA Z462, lockout/tagout).
- Synthesis skills, documentary rigor and a taste for verifiable work.

Build reliable numerical models to support planning and operations decisions. Power flow, stability and interconnection studies on transmission and distribution networks, in Québec and internationally.
You develop and calibrate models, use field measurements, and analyze the impact of renewable generation on voltage, inertia and the behavior of islanded networks. You deliver clear recommendations backed by reproducible studies.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and calibrate HV/MV network models (DIgSILENT, PSS/E, ETAP, EMTP).
- Run load flow, transient stability and motor-starting studies.
- Analyze interconnections (generators, renewables, regional grids) per IEEE 1547 and grid codes.
- Automate scenarios (load growth, solar/wind injection, contingencies, islanding).
- Assess the impact of renewable generation on voltage, inertia and islanding management.
- Write clear, quantified and reproducible technical reports.
Required profile
- Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering; junior OIQ member (an asset).
- 2 to 5 years in network studies or significant academic experience (PowerFactory, PSS/E, MATLAB/Simulink).
- Understanding of machine models, excitation controls/PSS and small/large-signal stability.
- Autonomy, critical thinking and technical communication.
